My friend was threatened w/a virus...

Forum Windows XP : General Discussion My friend was threatened w/a virus...

Word : Username :

Okay, this is kind of serious because I don't know how well this works or not. I'm really concerned about this guy, cuz he threatened to screw up his computer with both a virus or by "bombing his port". I don't know the exact details he did for the victim, but I kinda know what he tried on me. (Note: He claims he cleaned out the guy's computer, but I don't know.)

Some things you should know about my computer system and how it's set up to the internet. BBIagent is always running, with the PPPoE connection always on. So, I've had the same IP address for awhile. Right before he started to work on me, I stealthed my ports through a setting in BBIagent. Then, ensured they were stealthed through the Shields Up! website by Steve Gibson. From BBIagent, that's connected to the switch, which is connected to my main computer.

I also have Panda Antivirus Platinum running with Permanent scan in the background. Also, Mozilla is my default and main browser.

Okay, here's the link to the actual conversation with this guy, who will not remain anonymous. He has more than one s/n, but still. Please help me if this is even possible, or look into this. Just reading this will do no harm to your computer, but don't click the included links, as it actually does retrieve your IP address.

I'm sorry if this was long, but this is really important to me. I don't want this to happen to anyone else, if there's a chance this is circulating around the internet.

Thanks for any help you can give me. Reply ASAP.
Bryan

this is why I hate and would never use AOL. Kiddie Playground.

I don't have AOL as a service, just AIM because all my friends use it. Luckily, I'm not that much of a target.

If you guys know Fred Langa, he gave me a prompt response. I basically cut and pasted my initial post:
It's probably an empty threat--- the damage is the worry and concern it causes rather than anything actually done to the pc.

All these kinds of treats go away if you (1) use a good firewall, (2) run a good AV tool and (3) make good backups. Items 1 and 2 will prevent or cure most problems, and in the unlikely event they don't, #3 is still there to save your data.

My suggestion: run backup now, and save all user data. Run at least 2 different online anti-virus scans. If a full local AV tool is available, use that, too. then reboot. Oods are, nothing will happen.

I've done the backup last night of just my data. I did one AV scan with Panda, and I'll try another with an online scan from Norton and Panda, too. Then I'll reboot. I have a feeling he's right that nothing should've happened.

I would appreciate, Calv, if you would look into it still. He stated that he did this to his brother's computer, because his brother was will to thrash his old computer. And, when he rebooted, it didn't work anymore. So, I don't know. This guy is a real idiot, so it's hard to take what he says seriously.

Thanks again for the replies.

ok, I read it all, my opinion is that the gangsta dude is a total dummy - just out to wind you up.
The 4.x.x.x ip is real, though theres no page there, it resolves to

tamqfl1-ar5-4-47-067-027.tamqfl1.dsl-verizon.net

if the dude had a web server or something up at the time, he could have got your ip very easily from netstat (Im not sure how AIM works- weather you can get an IP direct from that- maybe- you can with ICQ)
all the "my website" links were dead (only 2 different ones - one of which was that 4.x.x.x IP)
I cant see how he could plant anything on your pc - let alone a virus or something he wont even say the name of - and the fact that its not available on the net because some friend developed it, well, I wouldnt worry a bit about it. Do you/this bloke go on irc or anything? I'd like a chat with him :)

He's not that competent with computers. It's all basically done in this "one program". But, he did get my IP somehow. Probably when I clicked that link that takes me to that 4.x.x.x IP address.

Anyway, he is truly a big idiot who has no life. And, I'm not sure of what logical way he can "plant" a virus on my computer without me accepting it by download or email.

If you want to chat with him, I think he's only available through that screenname in AIM.

Thanks for taking the time to read through it. I really appreciate it...

if you was connected to his server, he has your ip address.
but if it is not a static ip (so a dynamic one), to deconnect & reconnect you on the internet will change your current ip address (with a DSL connection, keep your comp off for around 15 minutes.).

to enter to your comp without your acknowledgement, he could try telnet for instance.

It wasn't a server, it was just his personal computer. But, he stated that it logs my address and all variances of it, and watches my port. So, if I switch IP addresses, it'll refresh and get the new one. If I see him later, I'm going to ask if he has my current one. After I was done with him, I disconnected and reconnected again. So, I have a different IP now.

Telnet...he doesn't have the brainpower to know how to do all that.

BTW - When I initially read this thread, I was basically of the opinion that this dork was just yanking your chain. Now, I'm 100% in favor of that same opinion. Like CALV said, he's playing on your emotions.

Yeah, I know huh? I haven't heard from him since, and he's been online all the time.

Want me to get a freind of mine to permanently boot this guy off (fry his comp). hehe. See that's the problem w/ people who make threats- there's always someone who knows someone who partly works for the FBI, and likes adventures. mwahaha.

My frog asked me for a straw...dunno what happened he's all over the place

I love having connections. It's nice to know people like you, who know people.

Hey, did anyone notice I finally achieved Honorary Poster status? How sweet is that?

Hey, you finally registered here. Nice. I hope you use this for help when you can't get to me. Everyone here is awesome.

BTW, I hope you don't get sick of that alias you picked for yourself. I wouldn't think you'd pick a name that originated from mine, but I can take a compliment. Thanks!

I think...
There was never a virus.
How he got your ip? easy, he gave u a link to click (any link will do) which was generated by AIM Sniffer, you click > ip sent to the program. It does nothing else than that.

Reply to newbie

AIM Sniffer, thanks for that piece of information. I'll have to look into that. Unfortunately, I personally wouldn't click any AOL link anyway. I only did to see if he could hack into my computer. I just wanted to test my defenses.
