I need to buy a combo for a guitar player.
It is for live concerts.
Music is rock and the stage is not too loud.
The combo is to be microphoned every gig.
The guitar is a Gibson Firebird (I think Firebird V). It has to be this
guitar. (don't ask).
The player style is
1) Clean sound arpeggios (with pick). The sound should be "hard" and clear
on the mids.
2) Distorted sound, "big muff" style
I'd like to spend $500-$1000
I am thinking about some 30-50w tube combo (Orange? Music man 112? Vox AC30?
Gibson Classic? Marshall JTM 30?)
Any suggestion? Other amp brands? 1 or 2 channels?

Fender Blues Junior
I've run this thing with both my old Strat and my 76 Firebird and it works
(and for me anyways with pretty much identical settings- go fig).
I've done everything from clean Motown rhythm parts to Beach Boys blippy
surf stuff to clean and SRV/Hendrixian blues.
It's versatile enough that it'll be up to the player.
Biggest tone-tweak you can make (to your taste) is to pop in a different
speaker-of-your-choice. (I'd like to hear one with a WEBER California 12 but
that's just me...)
Also does dandy with an outboard closed-back cabinet for that sort of sound.

And when one says "I want that Big Muff" sound, one ASSUMES that there;s one
in the chain.
Yes, of course.....
I just wanted to know if the amp you suggest is capable of sounding good
with a Big Muff.....
For example a 8inches cone is less likely to have a good sound with a Big
Muff then a 12 or 15 one....

"sounding good"...
I think I might've addressed that overall.. The FBJ, when not pushed past
its limits, does a lot of what you tell it to.
What you sure sound like you're REALLY asking is
"will it make the exact sound I want?"
Well, you are the only ears on that side of this screen... Ya need to
beg/borrow/rent one, including several differnt-sounding replacement
speakers... Spend a weekend playing with the Guitarist In question and the
amp and then decide.
That's how it works
That¹s the ONLY way it works.
Let us know how the tests go!

And your point in the context of a Blues Junior...?
I donn;t know of anybody who tried an 8" speaker in one. Might be
interesting but I don;t have a clue what it has to do with this
discussion...
Other suggestion other the Blues Junior?
I will surely try that amp but, as I live in Italy, here I do not find all
the amps I'd like to try....

Yeah.. Problem there ...
Thing is, there's is WTILL no option beyond HEARING the amp.
As far as the FBJ, I got enamoured of it immediately once I;d played one as
a loaner and in subsequent meetings haven;t changed my opinion.
Aside from that it's just that there's a LOT of these things around.
They're less than $500 USD new, and a used one is whatever you can deal for.
There are 2 versions, the older ones need to be modified and the details are
clear. The later period ones are dandy as new.

They still make Big Muff pedals....

I haven't heard any of the new Orange amps, but
they used to be famous for being St00pid Loud.
The Music Man 112 is not a bad choice, but they've
been out of production for a while.
The AC30 is gonna be loud, but it's gonna sound good.
For "clean arpeggios", it's hard to beat a Fender
Super Reverb.... but the Fender Blues Junior
is smaller and less trouble.
Dunno what it's like trying to buy gear in Italy
( if you are in Italy ). Can you go try-n-buy
with the guy? What does he think?

Line 6 amp modellers are very nice and give you a variety of choices in amplifiers you can use. A
Flextone IIIXL, with two twelve inch Celestions, will cost you around seven hundred USD, and with
the pedal board, come in under a grand. You'll be able to get any sound you can think of and then some.
We use Line 6 gear on stage, no mic necessary as it has a built in direct box (stereo if you want),
on board effects, including the Muff, I believe. And the volume can be as quiet as you want and yet
sound like an amp cranked to eleven.
