I am using windows 7. some applications were working in xp. How can active those applications windows7. I have been advised to use virtual pc software for this. how can do that. Guide me

XP mode is NOT in Windows 7 home...only Pro or Ultimate...

You could run a Windows XP virtual machine using different software from XP mode. Microsoft's Virtual PC or something like that works even in the home versions of Windows 7 if I remember correctly. Even if not, I know that VMWare Player and VirtualBox work in Windows 7 home versions. All three of these programs are free, but you'd need to provide a Windows XP installation disk or ISO file.
