Hi,

I was thinking of buying the Mackie 824 studio monitors and then I
realized that my Sony Str-da4es home theater receiver is in the next
room but very close to my recording gear here. About 10 feet away.
It's a very nice amp and so the thought was to send some wires to that
amp and then back to some passive monitors for around $1000, instead of
the Mackie active monitors at around $1500. And I'd have the benefit
of being able to listen to mixes on the home theater setup as well in
the next room.

What do you guys think about this? Would the Sony amp sound too nice
and therefore not accurate enough? If that's not a bad idea, then
which passive monitors would you guys recommend?

Thanks a lot.
Hibes

No problem with this..
Only issue being that indeed you're happier with the sound of your
passives-with-the-Sony vs the Mackies (or anything else!)

Sony ES amps are suitable for monitoring IMO, but powered monitors have the
benefit of active crossovers, and it would take some pretty serious passive
monitors to compete with that aspect alone. I think you'll have to spend
$1500 either way. If it were that simple, they'd have trouble selling
active monitors when you can find suitable poweramps used for under $200, ie
Hafler DH220.

I think another issue might be that you will have to have the amp on
full (or up loud) most the time so you can adjust the volume on your
desk..then don't forget to turn it down when listening in the hifi room....
I'm a dynaudio fan, so some passive dynaudios would do me, but go
somewhere and listen.
I think all mackies are active, no?
Event make passives...

I wouldn't use a Sony amp with a studio monitor...
Your amp is too "complicated" and that affects the sound. You have to hear
what is happening in you mix!
If you are thinking about passive monitors then get a Behringer A500
http://www.behringer.com/A500/index.cfm?lang=ENG (that is $229.99) or
something similar and modify it!

Thanks a lot guys. Think I'll just stick with active monitors then.

Much appreciated.
