? about ram in my pc

I currently have one 512mb ddr pc2700 chip in my pc, I have a friend who would be willing to trade me for his ram, the problem is he has one stick of 256mb ddr pc2700 and one stick of 128mb ddr pc2700, would I get more out of the two sticks even though they are different sizes? Should I keep what I have? Is there a problem installing two different sizes of ram? I would really appreciate comments or suggestions.

the trade will work however, i must warn you that your performance with 2 sticks of 256 + 128mb will be less than your 1 stick of 512
