for a recording project I'm working on. A wide selection of clear, high
impact stuff. Any help will be deeply appreciated.

There is a sound font called action and adventure, or something like
that. This also has some FX.

"Hollywood Edge" has among their offerings a full CD of just car sounds,
and their stuff is pretty good.

ouch! some pricey stuff! It might be worth it, but then again who can
tell before hearing them. I had a laptop mac ( unfortunately it died,
like many of it's sibling dual usb g3s, shortly out of warrantee ).
There's alot of effects cd and dvd on ebay at reasonable prices ( I'm
not commercial on this yet ), but they aren't specifically auto sounds.
Perhaps one of the cd sets or dvd there could get me started, then a
trip to the local race track and around town ( Miami ) if I can borrow
a laptop... or find a collaborator, or... I've had this idea for quite
a while ( should be bigger than " who let the dogs out" ), started
looking using "samples" as a search term and got nowhere. I thought
"sound effects would get me where I wanted to go, but I'm beginning to
doubt that. I need to do some creative thought here I guess, unless I
get a break.

Bottom right link to 99 free samples in a decent baud MP3 format.
There are only a couple of car sounds here, but you can find their
total availability on the site and many of the discs are packed with
the same car sounds you've heard for ages on TV and film.

The high res sample CD is also available free for the asking. It
smokes the MP3s.

After the samples, the discs aren't cheap... but the license that
comes with them is good for a lifetime of usage. Well worth it
if you do much of this stuff.
