I've been looking for a replacement speaker for my Vox Valvetronix
AD15VT amp. It's a 15-watt tube hybrid with an 8" 8-Ohm Vox speaker.
I guess you know this already, but for those who don't, here are some
URL's:
I use the amp for recording only, so loudness is not an absolute
necessity. I would rather have it sound good than loud, but if I could
have both then that would be ideal. I play mostly blues, pop rock and
classic rock. I want a warm, smooth, rich tone with early break up,
nice highs but not too bright. After some searching, I am now down to
the following two choices:
1. Weber Alnico Signature 8
2. Celestion Super 8
Which one should I get?
Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
:-)

Vox originally used Celestion as their OEM speaker.

I thought these amps were supposed to sound great via line-out?

This is a good time for you to call Ted Weber and speak directly with him.
He'd love to sell you a speaker and will probably address your question
better in a conversation. He's got all kinds of things and can even build
you something special (mix 'n' match)-- probably without any upcharge if it
takes stock parts. I think you'll be surprised at how easy it is to get
through to the man himself. If you don't feel like calling or it's not
convenient, try an email. Contact info is on his website.

Actually, the Alnico Signature 8 was Ted Weber's "best bang for the
buck" recommendation for my amp. I don't know if it's wise and proper
to ask him which one is better between a competitor's speaker and his
own. :-)

Ted clones the other guy's stuff at very good prices and his merchandise is
top quality. We're not talking about cheap foreign made knock offs here. I
understand your concern, but it's probably not warranted in this case. Get
the Sig 8. If you don't like it, you'll get 75-80% of your cost on eBay.
That's a small price to pay for "renting" it so you can see. Or, you might
hold out for one on eBay.

This is what I've gathered from researching at different forums and
reading reviews on the Valvetronix line: For the price of the AD15VT,
Vox had to cut on something, and it happens to be the speaker. I've
learned that changing the speaker is the best mod you can do for this
amp. Regarding the stock speaker being tailor-made for the amp, I
don't believe so, because the higher-end model AD50VT in the
Valvetronix line has a stock Celestion 70/80 speaker, which is
certainly not a Valvetronix-specific speaker. The AD50VT has basically
the same electronics as its little brother.

Unfortunately, the line/headphone out on this amp is not stellar
because it bypasses the tube. This is a little flaw in its design as I
sadly found out later. There's a mod to work around this, but I don't
care for direct recording anyway. I prefer the sound of a mic'd up
amp.

I want to experiment with getting a little distortion from speaker
break-up while using the clean patches, hopefully to get it sounding
like a real tube amp cranked up. I also want to have the ability to
push the distortion further on the dirty patches if I want to. And I
want to try dialing in less of digital (software-simulated) and more of
analog (tube and speaker) distortion for a more convincing result.

I had a decent play on the AD15VT in the store. I played through the
speaker and through headphones. I don't see why people rate these so
high? I mean the clean sounds I admit were damn nice, very tempting
even, but the Marshall dirty sounds were awful. I could only get a mega
over-the-top distortion, but no ACDC crunch on any of the heavier
channels. Maybe it takes alot of tweaking?

I think you're right about this. I have an AD30VT and swapped out the
stock 10" speaker for a Eminence Ramrod I had laying around. While I
was in there I rigged up the wiring to separate the amp from the
speaker so I could patch the Vox amp to external speaker or play
another amp through the internal speaker.
My conclusion after a couple of hours of playing was that the AD30VT
sounded way better with the stock speaker- much too dark through the
Ramrod. However, the Ramrod in the Vox cab sounded pretty good when I
used another amp though.

Used to own one. Loved it. Played one recently and it sounded too
scooped. Couldn't get the mids back. I **love** the Tri-AC though, but
it's not really wonderful in front of a tube amp.

Dave:
I agree that you have more chances of messing up when replacing the
stock speaker of a modeling amp. However, it doesn't mean that you
can't replace it or that there is no other better speaker for it. The
Ramrod is probably just too aggressive for the AD30VT. Here is what
Ted Weber said when I asked him to confirm his speaker recommendation
for my AD15VT in light of the fact that it is a modeling amp:
"Generally speaking, a modelling amp does all of the voicing for the
system, so a speaker that is smooth and clean is what is normally used.
However, I still think an AlNiCo Sig 8S will work fine since you won't
be cranking it into heavy distortion."
And here is a happy user who replaced the stock speaker of his AD30VT
with a Celestion Vintage 10:
