My friend's computer acts strangely and we dont know what the problem is. Sometimes it just shuts down itself and it takes like 5 minutes before he can turn the computer on again cause it just wont boot. It shuts down just like that...it could shut down when he aint even doing anything. Temperatures are ok so it's not it. He has 2 hard drives and sometimes one of them makes strange noise. But we don't think it's the hard drive because even older games like counter-strike has low FPS and it doesn't matter on which HD he has those games, they are still laggy.

Also his CPU usage is normal, it must be some hardware failure.

It might be a memory problem, we don't really know. Might be also power or motherboard or HD, even video problem. Is there a software that would check all the components and find possible errors? Any tips on this? Thanks!

His specs:

Athlon 1.4 GHz
768 MB DDR (512+256)
Soltek SL-75drv2 motherboard
Geforce 2 Ti
2xHD (120+40)
Win XP

It might say 300W but it might not deliver enough ampes across the right voltage lines. Get some more specifics on what PSU it is. It should have the ampes listed on the side of the PSU.

For that system he NEEDS 13A+ on +12V. If he is not getting that he can get all kinds of errors. He is probably fine on +3.3V and +5V.

it could be other components but look at that PSU first and report back in.

you may want to consider looking at the fan attached to the cpu and make sure it is working correctly. Because if it is not running as fast or lose, then it could be the cpu overheating
