Hi,

I've inherited a set of NS10s from someone who's upgraded their setup.
They're a step up for me and my shitty hifi speakers, but the NS10s have the
obvious limitation of their bass deficiency and I mix a variety of music
that needs good representation of the low end.

I've got an additional £300 ($500) to spend on new monitors.

My question is: should I spend the £300 on monitors and keep the NS10s as
secondary speakers, or sell the NS10s (they're going for £300 on eBay) and
buy some "better" (flatter? more transparent?) monitors for the £600/$1000
I'll have in total?

Any suggestions of what models I should look out for in those price ranges
before I go down to the shop to have a listen? I have no problem with buying
used from eBay but I'd obviously like to check out the sound of an
equivalent model (ie in a shop) first.

Thanks

TJ

Hi TJ
Personally, I would sell them and get something " better". I sold mine
and haven't missed them for 1 second.
What amp are you using? This will affect what you buy too.

I like these for example:

If you don't have a decent amp, consider active monitors too...
Event make some pretty cheap decent speakers and there is a good offer here:

http://www.musicstorekoeln.de/de/g [...] store.html

I'm considering this as a "b" pair of monitors in my studio and they
ship very economically to the UK. I have NEVER had the slightest problem
with them as a shop.

Thanks for the advice. Probably a hifi amp for now, but a fairly decent hifi
amp if that makes a difference. Does it? I might be using the amp that the
previous user was using with the NS10s... a Yamaha hifi amp that seemed to
work ok and went plenty loud enough for my needs.

Would there be a reason to go with either active or passive monitors if it's
given that one would be using a decent amp if one were to buy the passives?

I might be wrong, but I seem to remember Turnkey doing them for a similar
price; you might save on shipping. Turnkey will match Thomann's prices so
they may well do for this place.

Cheers

Sell them and get something that's more appropriate for the music
you're working with. Or you could learn the trick of watching how the
cone warps when the speakers are getting bass that they can't handle.
I've been told that some people find this to be an effective way of
judging low end content that they can't hear. Personally, I wouldn't
trust it myself, but I don't record music with extreme low end.

No. Go shopping first and see what's available that you can listen to.
Take a morning off work and go at a time when the store isn't busy.
Choose some good and bad recordings to listen to. If you have a
reasonably portable way of bringing some of your recorded tracks to the
store so you can try mixing on the speakers you're evaluating, do that.
Don't listen to so many that you get confused. Start learning how to
describe the differences between them that you hear. Go back and listen
again.

Make sure that the dealer you buy from will let you return them for a
full refund if you find, after working with them at home for a little
while, that they don't do the job for you. This is really important and
it's something that you won't get if you buy speakers through eBay.

That's £300 the pair with an amp...
Turnkey for the minute have them at £175 each (minus amp)

Or keep the NS10s, and spend your £300 on a speaker for LF.

While lots of people like the NS-10 as a check-mix monitor, and some people
can even mix on them exclusively, I suggest you don't learn to do this. If
yu are just starting out, I'd suggest starting on something as clean and
accurate as possible. So I'd suggest selling the NS-10s.

Go to your local shop and see what they have. I'd suggest giving the
Tannoy Reveal a listen before anything else in that range. The Mackies
are probably a little bit out past the end. But even the old NHT Super
One home stereo speaker is a workable monitor.
