Connect it to your computer and start itunes, making sure that synchronisation is enabled.

"i have picked my music up here and there from different peoples librarys and i won't be able to find it again"

Well, that's the price of going with the crowd. The iPod is a deliberately limited product.

It is possible to download files from an iPod and save them into a new copy of iTunes (I've done it just following tips found via Google) but it's a hassle.

Might be worth investigating in your case.

Then might I suggest, having recovered your music (or not) replace the iPod operating system with the appropriate Rockbox version. That will allow you to access your music freely and let you dump the incomprehensible iTunes and just drag and drop files like virtually every other player does.

Google "copying my music from iPod" or similar -- there's a way to recover the full file names back into a fresh version of iTunes but I've lost the link to the tips I found (hoping never to have to use it again as it was so tedious).
