I am curious if anyone is using 2 presonus firepods with there pc
in order to be able to track 16 channels at a time. I am also curious
what people think of the presonus preamps. I did a google search on
this but didn't really find any relavent reply's.
I am currently using a Mackie 1604 VLZ Pro mixer to 2 Tascam DA
78's. From there I import my recordings into my pc with my MOTU 2408
MKII. My pc is a Pentium 4 with a 2.8 Gig. processor and with 1500
megabytes of ram and a 200 gig 7200rpm hardive.Thank you for any advise
or opinions on my question!

Probably not unitl very recently. Presonus just released a driver that
can accommmodate up to three Firepods for 24 channels in and you.

People don't usually talk much about things that aren't exceptional.
That means it's not garbage, but that you're not getting eight $1,000
preamps either. Try one. You'll probalby find it to be on the same
order as your Mackie VLZ Pro.

At an MSRP of $299.00, Firepod seems to good to be true. I'm curious
as to what they sound like, but I'm not holding my breath.

I've got the firepox (8 min/line I/O plus 2 spdif-coax I/O) and I like it.
Power is by external 12--24V adapter. It could work on batteries, but it
runs pretty hot, so you'll need a big battery for field work.
I have not been spoiled by high end preamps, but I would rate this thing
better than some low-midrange stuff, like the Edirol UA5. I did take a look
inside, there appears to be some discrete transistors as a front end, but some
rather low end opamps (mc33079). It *looks* like there are four transistors +
two opamps per channel, but I can't be sure about that.
The box comes with its own ASIO drivers and Cubase LE. I was pleasantly
surprised at how reliable and easy to use Cubase is. This is in contrast to
Adobe Audition (MME drivers) which dropped samples and Mackie Trackion, which
used ASIO, but locked up my computer often. I have not tried Protools. Well,
I did use it briefly, but I couldn't figure out the interface.
OK, there was one problem. The supplied version of Cubase LE (ver 1.08) has a
limit of *four* simultaneous inputs! Apparantly Yamaha bought Cubase (or
Steinberg) and snuck this limit in. I guess Cubase LE was too good. Anyway,
I complained and Presonus sent me ver. 1.07, and this works fine.
A big Thank You to all of you that have responded to my post. I am
still kicking tires but it has been nice to hear your input! Thank you
once again.

Why wouldn't just record direct to your computer using the 2408? What
software do you currently use?

Actually, I think the older driver for it allowed for two to be daisy
chained. I remember not considering it over the Aardvark Q10 for that
very reason : not being able to record more than 16 channels at once
(I was aiming for an eventual 24 track studio).
Now, I'm thinking I have something to work towards... after all, like
The Q10, you should be able to bypass the mic-pres by using external
pres plugged in as 1/4". Course, that doesn't bypass the AD
convertors... *sigh*

The reason I don't want to use the MOTU is because with it I can
only track 8 channels at a time. I do not have anything with ADAT out
and I am trying to down size for all the gear I need to take along when
I sey up to track someone so I don't want to continue hauling along the
Tascam DA 78's.
If I could hook up 2 PreSonus units....they would easily go into
a nice small lightweight SKB case and hopefully do the same job but
without so much bulk! I am using Samplitude and it rocks!!!

Higher quality converters, and still expandable to 24. Do you need the
mic pres?

Hey Mark...thanks for the suggestion of the MOTU. The reason I am
considering the PreSonus is because of the mic pre's as well as it's
price. It is a better fit for my budget right now.........otherwise I
would be looking at a RME!

I know. What I'm hoping to be able to do is still use the blessed
thing as a master clock, since that was one of the things Aardvark
excelled at anyway. :-\
