my friend has a comp with a 400 FSB he has 256mb DDR266 PC2100. his mobo supports PC2700 DDR333 but he got the DDR266 PC2100 because thats the max a 400FSB can support is DDR266. It can support DDR333 but only if the FSB is 533.

Now he has money to get 1 gig of DDR333 PC2700 he wants to put the 1 gig stick next to the 256 DDR266 PC2100. is it ok to mix the two different speeds or he can only have one or the other??

he doesnt want to get 1 gig of DDR266 PC2100 because his mobo supports a 533 FSB so when he upgrades in the future he wants the memory to be DDR333 PC2700.

Definatly dont mix speeds and dont mix brands.
to get the best performance buy 1gig of the same brand or a matched pair
