I ve decided to build my first pc and have settled on the dfi lanparty for the motherboard and a 2500+ barton that will be overclocked. what would be the best memory to match with this and what should the settings be? I want 1G of memory.

PC3200 would be the choice. Corsair TwinX1024-3200LL, Kinston HyperX, OCZ, etc etc are available. Try to get identical or matched pairs.

do you feel that the high end corsair, kingston, mushkin, ocz are more or less all comparable. or is there one that has greater performance and/or greater compatibility with mobo's?

For intense overclocking with the nForce2 chipset I'd suggest quality DIMMs built with Winbond Rev B chips: Mushkin PC3500 Level II Black or OCZ EL PC3500 Platinum Limited Edition, for example.

BTW, all those brand said above can do at least 2-2-2-5, even my TwinMOS DDR400 can do 2-2-2-6 when at 200Mhz
A lot of nForce2 overclockers are reporting higher performance by setting Cycle Time (Tras) to 11 - other timings at 2. There's some example memory timings in <A HREF="http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9924&perpage=25&pagenumber=1" target="_new">this thread</A>.
