I have hooked up my 23" HP Monitor to my HP Pavillion Laptop. However, I can not get the resolution to go any higher than, I believe it was 1440 and it needs to be 1920. The laptop runs on Vista (64 bit).

What is the solution to this?

The laptop will have a smaller screen running at a lower res -- no great surprise that its video circuitry cannot produce a full picture on a much larger monitor.

Agreed. Chances are that you will not get full resolution on your monitor from the laptop, unless the laptop has a top of the line graphics card in it. You can try updating the GPU driver via the laptop manufacturer's website to see if you can squeeze a bit more resolution out of it, but chances are that it's maxed out.
