If you are going out and buying one of these new versions of the ratpor series;

How do you know you are getting the new version. I realize that if you get the 74 gig one it HAS to be the new version, but what if you are sticking to the smaller 36 gig one. (I thought i read that they upgraded that one too right? or am i off here?)

Any info would be helpful, I need two for raid, but can't afford the price on the 74. They do make 36gig ones with the same technology as the 74 ones right?

74GB is out, but VERY pricey (300USD OEM), and only on 'special order.' (probably means it isn't truly out yet) There is no such change to the 36giggers.

Damn Rambus.

yes, they are out...really out, i don't think its pre order you can order directly from WD and some online vendors right now. cheapest price is right at 300 bucks USD. a bit pricy for a 76 gig drive in my opinion, but it sounds like a sweet drive, too bad it would cost 600 bucks to put these into a raid......

Would'nt this be better -
2 36gb raptors raid 0 $224 + 120gb SATA JB $112 = $336

For security I would use a 3rd drive to keep information backed up instead of using RAID1 or RAID 1+0.

possibly, but the first version of the raptors, while very good, are loud squeeky and not as good as the second generation ones.
