I have a member of our Senior Group who wants to connect a Printer via a
Parallel Port ( I think that's what it's called) to a USB port on her
computer but we can't get it to work. She has a cable that converts to USB.

The printer keeps installing to LPT1 even though the other port is showing.
Epson 440 Printer.

Any thoughts please?

Many don't work.

I bought one and it didn't work on my ASUS motherboard using an Intel 845 chip-set. I
brought it to work and tried it on an Intel motherboard that uses an Intel 815 chip-set and
it worked. I contacted the vendor and determined that the device indeed have compatibility
issues with some chip-sets.

I returned it for a refund.

Instead I got a printer with an Internal HP JetDirect print server and I print to it over
the network by printing to the IP address. There is the HP the HP external JetDirect with a
parallel port. However this solution is not as economical if the user doesn't already have
a SOHO LAN.

I suggest a parallel port PCI card.

Try:

Disconnect the printer from the computer.
Uninstall the printer driver you currently have installed.
Leave the printer disconnected.
Install the printers Windows XP USB driver. Suggest you check with
manufacturer's web site to ensure that you have the latest version of the
printers Windows XP USB driver.
When directed by the drivers installation program connect the printer
and follow directions.

Printers usually have separate drivers for parallel and USB ports. These
drivers may be separate installation programs or selected by selecting the
interface type during installation. Sounds like your friend either
installed the parallel driver or she selected parallel during installation
because that was the port be used on the printer. She need to select the
printer driver based on the port being used by the computer -- USB is this
case.
