my ST340810A (a Seagate with 40GB) is starting to get old... the s.m.a.r.t. info already says the raw read error rate is going to reach the threshold in december, so I need a new one. Now the problems is: 40GB is enough for me, and a new hdd already is a 7200rpm (mine isn't) so it has to be faster than this, but I have the a7n8x, meaning I have SATA and SATA RAID 0 (I make frequent backups, so RAID 0 is not that unsafe). The problem is: a new 40GB hdd costs only 68€, but an 80GB SATA costs 102 and if I want raid 0, 204€. The question is: is SATA really worth it for these low cost hdd? And raid 0?
I leave my computer running 24/7 downloading from the Internet (not heavy use I believe) but really want to be able to copy a cd-image in far less than the 6 minutes it takes now. Noise is extremely important for me, but performance is also important. The prices here are the best I can get here, so please don't say you could get cheaper.
P.S.: I tried to get info from the Tom's reviews, but I really won't ever use those 200GB monsters reviewed and the raptor sounds too expensive and I also believe it is too noisy
