Hi,

I have been running a MSDN Version of Windows XP Professional for several
years. I would like to convert this to a store purchased version due to the
fact that I cannot upgrade to either SP1 or SP2 or download critical hot
fixes anymore. Is there anything I should be aware when trying to install a
new copy of XP Professional over my existing copy? Can I install XP Home
over it? Any other options?

Thanks,

Johnny

You need to buy a full retail XP Pro, I don't think the MSDN
eval version qualifies as an upgrade path. And no, XP Home
will not install over Pro.

Your least expensive option would be to buy an OEM XP Pro
SP2 and do a clean install, but a retail XP Pro SP2 will do
a reinstall and your files and settings "should" be
retained.

MSDN versions are retail versions. But you are so stupid in your premise that I wonder how you got an MSDN version. WTF would it have anything to do with upgrading to a SP.

MSDN is a SUBSCRIPTION, that expires and have EULA that
differ from retail. The OP has not renewed his
subscription

However, interesting food for thought:

As this has never happened to me nor has been noted....will make a private
post now.

As I understand it, having owned MSDN subscriptions three ways, here is
how you get access to MSDN:

1) MS Certified Partner Agreement - comes with 5 MSDN Univ Licenses
2) MS ISV Partner - comes with 5 MSDN Univ Licenses
3) Purhcase MSND licenses individually

All of the above expire every year are require a fee to renew. The
Certified Partner agreement and the ISV have additional requirements
than just paying a fee.

I have, in the past 5 years, seen MSDN installs not accept service
packs, even seen Windows XP from MSDN not take SP1 or SP2 due to a key
violation - it appears that a list of MSDN Univ keys were disabled by MS
without contacting the owners of the keys - we were one of them at the
last company I worked for. There was no simple method to fix the
problem, MS suggested a wipe/reinstall from the MSDN using our new keys.
