Bad Drive

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2655XDVD & the DVD drive is no longer functioning. (The light flashes for a while then goes solid & the screen says "cannot read drive D: Abort Retry Fail") The rest of the computer seems OK. Can I replace it with a notebook CD-ROM or do I really have to put the specific part in there like laptopparts.com said I have to? Where seems to be the cheapest place (or site) to buy parts?

I would first find out from Toshiba the model of the drive in question, get a quote from them on a replacement and work from there, searching eBay and laptopparts.

Who's General Failure and why's he reading my disk?

Tried a drive cleaning disk? Might be that simple and inexpensive.
