NTOSKRNL.EXE PROBLEM

Last response: in Windows XP

i tried to change my bootscreen by accessing systems32 folder and replacing
ntoskrnl.exe with a different executable file and rename it to ntoskrnl. now
this wont work unless i do this on safe mode. So first i downloaded the
bootscreen that i need at themexp.org and then reboot and go to safe mode by
pressing f8. Im now on safe mode and make the changes. i went to systems32
folder, take the original ntoskrnl.exe and put it in a place where i can
access it next time. then i went to the folder where i downloaded the
replacement file (from themexp) and renamed it to ntoskrnl. Cut and paste it
to systems32 folder. now i exited and then reboot. expecting that my new
bootscreen would show up, unfortunately it didnt. all i can see is a black
screen. i waited and waited but nothin happen. Its just all black. So i
pressed the power button to turn it off. And i turned it back on but i went
to safe mode. it printed a line, just one line, that says '
multi(0)disk(0)..../windows/system32/ntskrnl.exe ' and thats it. it stopped
there. thats all i can see. i turned it off. now i dont know what to do.
pls help me.
thank you.

system information:
windows xp home edition
upgraded from service pack 1 to sp2

You're going to need to boot from a CD, and do some work at the command
line.
eg a windows cd >>recovery console or a third party cd that allows you to
shift files around.

Do you have a Window CD that you can boot from or recovery console already
installed on the computer?

Also do you have a copy of the full download of the SP2 Service Pack? You
can extract the SP2 version of ntoskrnl.exe from it?

Basically you will need to replace that file ntoskrnl.exe with the original
one
