updates failed

why is it when i go to the download site it tells me i need 18 critical
updates and when i click install the box comes up telling me that " such and
such" download failed and it does this through all 18 of them ?? i have xp
pro installed with sp2...i have tried to download after disabling my firewall
and still no joy.
