Drive Failure

Hello folks,
My friend has a Segate hard disk, and has a very funny problem.
Every time he boots his computer the drive appears as failed, and is not identified by BIOS. Then if he boots again everything is OK, without changing anything.
I would love to hear any idea about why this problem is happening, and more importantly, how to resolve it?
