I have a P3 600MHz with 256 PC133 RAM. Im running WIN2000 and maby going to install XP in the future. Will an upgrade to 512MB RAM have a large increase in performance or is it not woth the upgrade?

Alo checked my MEM usage and it oly says 200MB..

Hehe, 512MB could DOUBLE your performance under XP when running some programs.

I was in a similar situation to you. I went from 128mb to 384, saw a drastic performance increase in windows XP. I had a p3 500mhz. I suspect the ram you need is pretty cheap, similiar to what I had. I would go for it. XP eats ram up, in a good way :)

Thx for the feedback. All your responses seem to relate to Win XP, what about Win 2000? Will a speed increase will also be seen? I want to get a stick of 256MB PC 133 RAM, what type do I need to get?

You should expect about the same difference with Win2k...its roughly the same O.S. and could use the memory about as much as WinXP could.

As to the type of ram, I can't say that it would really matter as to the brand, as it is getting difficult to find that anymore unless you go to Crucial.com and get it there.

You won't get as much of a boost in 2k as XP, because XP's wizbang features use up more RAM. Having ony 256MB is more of a handicap for XP because XP sux RAM more than any other OS ever conceived.

Your processor can handle the XP upgrade if you are planning on it :) Honestly my p3 with 384mb runs great with XP (plus i tweaked the thing to death hehe)

My father's laptop has 2 sticks of 256, and uses windows 2000. One of the sticks "died" on him, and he is always complaining of how poor the speed is nowadays. I have been on it, and it really does seem to be a lot slower. Again, if you can get the ram at a cheap price, I personally would go for it. If you have the money, go for the upgrade to XP :) while ur at it, just upgrade your whole system haha

K cool, gonna upgrade the RAM, hell its only $20 on ebay. Any reputable companies you guys recommend?

I'm gonna stick with this system for now, just wanna speed it up a little. No need to sell it as I just end up losing money.

Stay with win 2000, win xp sucks. But I think you should still get the RAM, preferably from crucial.com since they make very high quality ram at cheap prices.

Win2000 and XP does operate on the philosophy that the more ram you have, the better it will work. However 256mb of ram will work ok with winxp but that os will consume half that for itsself alone, which will give not much for those memory-hogging apps. With and computer parts and systems out there, unless that memory upgrade is free, then I would just get better system. Hope this helps
