I like laptops due to their portability but, they lack of grunt like a desktop. Other then spending $5000, are there any alternatives?

Hm...there are desktop replacement laptops, but like you said, they're expensive. They can cost like 3000 dollars for a good one.
Other than getting a computer with a microATX board and a really small case, I don't have any answers for you. Sorry
