How can I back up commercial DVD's? I hear I need 8 gigibyte dvd discs. Where can I buy them. Can I do it with any ordinary burner? Thanks

Well, I take it you really mean backing-up your dvd collection...I've had good results with DVD X Copy Platinum and DVD X Copy Express and I do it with regular 4.7 Gb disks...the program uses compression to achieve this.

...or a better one (cuz it's free!) is DVDShrink. Check out DVDRhelp.com. Great forum for backing up DVDs and all things dv!

Yes! The only speed-bump you might encounter would be encryption (liks CSS for examp.). But you can just get DVDDecryptor (also free!) and you're good to go.

im am just giving this alittle update, alot of people talk down upon 321 studios xcopy and think highly of dvd Shrink. Basically there were movies i feel dvdshrink copies bad, example Perfect Storm. Now i have 811s Liteon and use Ritek DvD-R... ok i burnt over 70 Dvd's and only 1 coaster, that one coaster was with dvd shrink. But anyway i own DvD xcopy Platinum 3.2.1 and it is fanominal. Never had one problem, the way i do it with out any conflicts what so ever is i open Platinum and click the SIMPLE tab... Rip dvd to a folder on Desktop.. you got your Audio TS and Vidio TS, around 22 min... and then I open up SOniC MyDVD (came with my burner) select Data disc and add those folders and burn (14-15 min) no problems ever.
overall in my collection i've racked up around 300 dvds
thanks

Your "single coaster" had nothing do to with dvdshrink. dvdshrink doesn't do the burning job, it uses Nero for burning

Can't say I've ever used xcopy Platinum 3.2.1, but DVDShrink has worked fine for me every time... and umm, yeah, it's free.

Hi,

You can go to http://www.dvdrhelp.com and do a search.
There are also good applications out there that can do the backup like DVD X Copy from 123 studios.
And I don't think you need 8GB DVD discs - normal 4GB discs will do.

Hope this helps :)
