I'm going to be building an Athlon64 system running a 3000+ (check this: http://www.theinquirer.org/?article=13187) on a MSI K8T800 mobo. My question is do these systems still need registered RAM? I'm looking at the higher performance end for my ram but the registered is a little out of my price range (1gig). Any suggestions for a good registered ram source, if needed? And, if not, some high perf ram at 512 or 1gig.

Thanks,

Registered RAM is required for the current Athlon64 FX. Use unbuffered RAM with Athlon64 3000+. I favor the memory modules built with Winbond Rev. B chips - Mushkin PC3200/PC3500 Level-II, Corsair XMS PC3500 C2, and OCZ EL PC3500 Platinum Limited Edition, for example - but there should be some cheaper alternatives. Get one 512MB stick if 512MB is the goal and two 512MB sticks if 1GB is the goal.
