Hi Ron

I'm not aware of any free programs off hand but I know there is shareware out there that will allow you to do what you want.

YOu can go to www.cnet.com or www.download.com or www.jumbo.com and www.tucows.com to find some good software that can help you with this. I believe NERO will accomplish what you want and there is a shareware version you can download and try.

Hope this helps.

For free?

Well, you can backup your hard disk using Microsoft's backup tool that comes with Windows 2000... Though it doesn't split the image and ignores FAT32/NTFS filesize limitations, so you may have to make a couple of them.

Then just compress the image(s) to 650MB-split RAR files and burn to a CD.

However, in case of a disk crash, I believe you'd need to actually get into Windows to be able to restore the files, so you'd need to get the disk to another computer.

Personally, I'd recommend investing in Norton Ghost. It's a fantastic program well worth the $70 pricetag. It's practically a guarantee that it will suit you much better than any free program.

Yeah, I'm not sure if there are anything out there for free, either.

IMO, Drive Image 2002 has been very user-friendly and simple to set up. You can also schedule it to run automatically to image your desired partition to another partition/hard drive/CD writing device. You can set it overnight, so that in the morning, you feel like tweaking anything and you screw something up, you can fire up DI to go back to your last image.

With ImageExplorer, you can extract certain files from an image. For example, if some of your files become corrupt, you can restore them as last backed up with your image. I hope that made sense...

At least with Drive Image, it's not mandatory to use boot disks, like Norton Ghost, unless you don't install it into your Windows system. I use it, Toey uses it, and Fred Langa (who I originally got the recommendation from) uses it.

Here's a possible good deal I just searched and ran into, but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle:

In my opinion, Ghost and DriveImage are both excellent programs - very useful.

why would they include software that doesn't work with your hardware? That makes no sense to me. Are you sure it won't work? Sometimes they associate the word SCSI with CD-R/W's as a generic term, meaning all types of CD-RW, even IDE.

It's always the one thing you never suspected.

CD Res-Q only ships with SCSI PlexWriters, but it will function with IDE Atapi Plextor CD-RW drives. If you can find a copy, as it can no longer be purchased separately.

CD Res-Q

However, Drive Image is the superior product, in any case. If you have access to it, I wouldn't be concerned with obtaining CD Res-Q.
