I just bought a nokia 5300 and a lg hbs-200 headset/headphones. everything connects alright but only the volume and talk buttons on the headset work and i have just as poor sound quality as my little motorola headset. i know these headphones are capable of better quality but why cant i get my phone to realize it. any ideas? is there an update for my phone to allow this to work?
More detail required about what is 'poor quality'.

well, sounds like the same side being played through both ears, one is quieter than the other and it has a staticy sound that sounds like its being played through a very tiny blown speaker, however i know the headphones are good because my ring tone comes through with excellent quality. if it helps i'm running rogers music player. if anyone can tell me what the code is to get the firmware i can check that too, nokia's site didnt help much.
Probably the interface, make sure it's not a 4 segment jack, because it sounds like you're plugging into only part of it.
Either that or the headphones are blown, ringtones don't count, they are usually monaural and pumped above normal VU levels, and so best way to test IMO is hook them up to a solid stereo/hifi source.
I had a pair of headphones that diplayed the same properties becuase they had an exposed wire inside the cord and it was causing havoc, knew right away though since the previous one were fine up to their inevitable weakeneing at the jack.
