I have a win 98 machine that was joined to a domain but it only showed up in
the workgroup. So i installed netbeui and that made it show up in the domain
but it still shows up in the workgroup any ideas?

Post to a win98 and/or networking newsgroup. Here is a list of all MS
Newsgroups: http://aumha.org/nntp.htm

Win98 computers cannot be made part of a domain. The OS supports
workgroups only.

Not that this has to do anything with WinXP, but.....

Win98 can not 'join' a domain.

98 can't join domain but can access it.
Changed the workgroup name to the domain name on the identification tab of
network properties.

Make the primary log on, Client for Microsoft network. Go to the properties
of Client for Microsoft Network and tick Log on to NT Domain and fill in
the Domain Name. Enable Wins and forget NetBEUI on the domain. Make sure
dsclient.exe is installed on 98 machine.
