external Sony DVD writer get Device cannot start (code 10)

Hi.

This device works fine when I plug it into my usb port on my Gateway laptop,
however, it runs slow because it's only usb 1.1.

When I plug it into my firewire port, it shows up in my device manager but
it has a yellow exclamation. It says Device cannot start (code 10).

How do I fix this?

WinXP Pro on Gateway 600x using Sony DRX-500UL external writer.
