The Gateway. It has a newer, faster processor and it is lighter than the HP.

Not sure what you are planning on doing with the laptop, but don't expect to play many games on it with the Integrated graphics.

I'm not playing any games.

I did find out the following.

The HP uses 600mhz ddr memory while the gateway uses the slower 533 ddr 2 memory.

Do anyone know the hard rive speeds?

The memory speed won't make a huge difference in your performance. The better speed of the gateway's CPU will take care of it. Both laptops look like they use slow 5400rpm HDD.
