trying to format W2K on a "possibly defective" HDD , i go through the four FDD boot disks, then the CD rom starts to load,....then blue screen comes up with the following message , with instructions to disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. (which i cannot see in BIOS)

does this error message mean a faulty HDD or something else ?.....(2 months out of warranty ),i already ran the seagate diagnostic utility , but it came up clean, this HDD always seemed to run hot :(

i had some similar errors come up during and after a windows install. i finally isolated the problem to my memory... however it wasn't faulty memory, it was just that the timings needed tweaking. these can be adjusted in the bios, which you get to typically by presssing "del" during boot up. i set my timings to the least agressive... 8, 3, 3, or something like that. you could at least try it to see if it takes care of your error message.
