If I burned all the update and sp2 uninstall files to a dvd and then deleted
them from windows and at a later time wanted to uninstall sp2 or any update
and moved them back to windows would that work ? The only reason I would want
to do this is in case I needed to do a repair installation later. I have a
notebook and would like to have the hard drive space.
Thanks for any responce.

It depends on what the problem is. It wouldn't work if your CD drive wasn't
working. But you are talking about two different things. If you've saved the
update files then so long as they can be accessed if needed then why would
it matter where they are?

The uninstall files under C:\Windows are for uninstalling the updates not
installing them.
Suggest you consider an image program. Norton Ghost and several others are
available. After you get your computer the way you want, you then can
create an image to DVD {or even better an external USB 2 or Firewire hard
drive because creating the image is faster than when using DVDs}. If you
then have problems you can restore your laptop from the image. Best, to
keep updating the image as your system changes.

I am only talking about the uninstall files under windows and sp2 uninstall
file. I have xp sp1 installation disk and if I need to do a repair install I
will need to uninstall sp2 to do that and need to know if I burn it to cd or
dvd will I be able to use that to put the uninstall files back and uninstall
sp2.

Did you read the SP2 install notes as you installed it? It may have said
something like you can't
uninstall it. Reinstall from scratch to lose it.

I have already uninstalled it once and completed a repair install.
Reinstalled sp2 from Microsoft updates and all other updates for my notebook.
I would like to have the space on my hard drive.

Create an installation CD that is slipstreamed with SP2. Then you won't
have to worry about uninstalling SP2 to do a repair install. Use the
slipstreamed CD for that. Here are some links for creating a
slipstreamed SP2 installation CD.

Thanks for the info, I've heard of slipstreaming but never have known how to
do it. I'll sure give it a try.

Hi,
Yes, that will work.
After you have put the $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder back,
you can start the SP2 uninstall process by running the file
C:\Windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe
