Specified domain on a new install

I have a brand new installation of XP. On trying to log in it reports:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted

It was never added to a domain. I just finished setup.

There is a choice, during installation, to add the computer to a workgroup
or a domain. Apparently you placed a tick in the domain box.

Actually the option never came up. The time setting and area code setting did
not come up either. Somehow all of that was bypassed.

Can it be fixed? Is there a way to get into a system that is looking for a
non-existant domain and change it to use a workgroup?

FYI: The same error comes in safe mode.

Since it's a new PC, I would start with the installation again. Ensure you
set the BIOS to look for the optical drive first.. boot from the XP CD,
delete the partition, create a new one and then do a clean install.

Go to Control Panel->System Properties->Computer Name Tab->Change
button->Select Workgroup and enter a name like MSHOME or WORKGROUP etc then
OK out and reboot.

Great advice - but since the user can't logon, it's also not
applicable to their situation.

When you are at the logon box, there should be a dropdown box listing
the domain name. If not, click the button that says Options (IIRC)
and then it should display that box. If click the down arrow on the
list box, you should see both the non-existant domain name and a name
of the local computer. You can logon to the local computer using the
default Adminstrator account and whatever password you assigned. Then
you can follow the advice below.
