Are RJ11-Phone (Modem Cables) Standard?

Is The wiring for Modem cables standard, or does it change from modem to modem? The reason I ask is because I have a Modem that cannot seem to find a dialtone on a phone line that I know has one. You can hear it 'click' but then it just disconnects again with lack of dialtone. Could this be the cable? Or is there any chance that the modem is faulty?

The cables are standard phone cables. Make sure you connect the line to input, NOT phone out.

Yeah, I got that bit right. Thanks for clearing it up tho. Atleast I now know that its the phone line and not the modem I sold (LT Win Modem, your favourite IIRC).

Yes, I like the old 1642 modems. Lucent has several models but the 1642 is my favorite for low CPU overhead (works on a 486 with the right driver!), low price, and solid connections.

Thats the exact same one Im using, and its running on a 133Mhz AMD 586 (probably about the same FPU power as a 486).
