Hey everyone,

I like a ton of other students am heading into freshmen year and need to buy a laptop. It will be my desktop gaming rig replacement so im looking to buy a powerhouse for the best price possible and i keep getting hung up on the question in the title. Which one really is better? Benchmarks on notebook check show that the 4850 wins but somehow beats the 20gtx sli in some tests? But if i check on their rankings page it shows the 260M GTX ahead. That it beats SLI 280s is highly unlikely so i began to seriously doubt their testing. Any thoughts regarding this? It would really help me decide between the MSI GT729 or the Asus republic of gamer brand laptops.

Here is the card ranking lsit from notebook check where the 260m is beating the 4850:

And here is the link to the FPS in games comparison of cards where the 4850 beats the 280M GTX sli in many cases (dont know how thats possible):

Hello and welcome to the forums :)
Notebookcheck has some strange results and i think that's because they tested with different systems, but for your answer both HD 4850 and GTX 260M perform pretty much like each other,in the 3DMark scores i saw HD 4850 managed to score slightly higher than a GTX 260M.

the gtx 260 isn't like the desktop version of the gtx 260, nothing alike....
as is says on notebookcheck :"it is not similar to the Desktop GTX 260 but somewhat similar to the 9800 GT"
and
The gaming performance of the ATI Mobility Radeon HD4850 should be compareable to the desktop HD 4830 and therefore very good.

you could try looking around at the desktop versions, but i'm not sure
If I we're you I would go with the ATI HD4850

But then again: "The performance of the GTX 260M is somewhat higher than with the 9800M GTX due to the higher clock speed. For current DirectX 10 games like Crysis, World in Conflict, Bioshock or Age of Conan, the performance of this graphic card is sufficient with medium and high details."
very confusing,

I say go for ATI

looks like a good choice there ^^
I hope you don't get screwed over like I did
I thought my nvidia 9600m gt was pretty good...
turns out to perform like a desktop 9500 gt, which sucks btw

I think you'll be fine though, you should get like 4830 performance

I decided to go a completely different route and buy from ebay. I ended up purchasing a quad core q9550, 9800gt sli, vista ultimate sager 9262 laptop which honestly since it was cheaper than the other 2 laptops i was looking at was a godsend. It was in my budget too of $1550 exactly. Its in almost new condition too. i appreciate the input and assistance though toms forums never disappoint.

yes it does look very good,
hope the performance is anything like a single gpu of this generation, since it laptops always lag behind one or two years.....
good to see it's a quad core too
