Buying a unlocked phone

Let me get this straight, My phone is falling apart, i want to get a new phone. I want to stay with my provider. But they don't sell the phone i want or it is to expensive. I buy the phone i want and it is unlocked, now i can add the simms card from the old phone to the new unlocked phone. and it will work with my provider and know one the wiser?
