A good update for this newsgroup would be to list posters IP address, that way these double posters and trols would have their dual identities exposed.
I disagree with that idea for two reasons. The first, anyone who wants to have a dual identity, can simply get a free aol trial, other free isp trial and do their posting through that. They don't even have to dial up anymore, they can connect through their current connection. Hell, I just realized, you don't even have to do that. Just find one of the many free proxies...
The second reason is a little more serious. Given the nature and maturity level of some of the people here, I foresee a huge problem with people using the IP info to get even with people they don't like or say things they disagree with. As confident as I am in the security of my own network, I would be concerned for newb's. Also, I really don't want my logs filling up with port scan's and exploit attempts immediately after I disagree with some punk.
OTOH, once they did, they'd have no real legal recourse for me paying them back...

If you people can pay back someone, I'd appreciate some non-criminal help. This IP address constantly sends my ZoneAlarm crazy ... I get "highly rated" alerts 15-20 times a day from: 24.92.47.217 ... a road runner address in NY. I've contacted RR - but they don't do anything. I'm concerned this asshole will succeed someday ...
Any suggestions?

He who laughs last thinks slowest!
What kind of info do you have about the traffic? Do you know what port it's attempting to connect to? Also, does Zone Alarm say anything about the type of traffic it is? If Zone Alarm isn't doing it, I would download Ethereal to identify specifically what kind of traffic is coming from that IP address. Once you know that, you'll know whether this is something serious to worry about.
Are you using a firewall product like a linksys/dlink/or-something-better router between your computer and the internet?
Cigarettes - No cholesterol, high in fiber, low in fat, how could they not be good for you?
Not using any routers/hardware firewalls ... I'll check out the other stuff ... not being a tech person, I have some problems knowing exactly what's happening ... except that I get port scans from that IP constantly.

So it's just port scans. I would STRONGLY recommend getting a hardware firewall. Those little boxes are relatively cheap, I've seen them for as little as 40 bucks on buy.com, that was a while ago so they might even be cheaper. They will provide a higher level of security than any software firewall can.
This is a basic rundown of how they work:
The router sits on your public IP address while your computer operates on a private IP address that can't be accessed from the public internet, except through the router. From the router, you will typically have options like "block all incoming connections" and "option for online gaming". Using these two options will typically setup a scenario where no network traffic can reach any computer on your network, unless your computer initiates contact with the outside computer. They also have options to allow certain types of traffic direct access to the computers inside your network, but unless you're running a service for people outside your network to connect to, this isn't neccesary.
That guy will still be able to port scan your IP address, but it will be the router he's port scanning, not your system. Zone alarm won't even detect the traffic because it won't reach your computer. Once you have that setup and you see that he's still port scanning you through your routers logs, I will tell you some things you can do back to him that may make him stop. But given you don't know who you are dealing with, I wouldn't try anything till you add that extra layer of security.
Cigarettes - No cholesterol, high in fiber, low in fat, how could they not be good for you?
I appreciate it ... can you recommend a good router ... I'm not saying money's no object, but $40-$80 isn't that big a deal to me ... I just would want to get something from Newegg that 1. will do the job (you describe), and 2. that I can configure without too much hassle ...
I appreciate your help ...

You'll probably want to use the gamer option anyway, as the functionality it adds is useful for things other than games.
I haven't used this particular model, but I've set up this product family for customers in the past and they've had no problems:
SMC Barricade 7004
It's 33 bucks after a 10 dollar mail in rebate. The stats look really good on it. Do you have any plans to go wireless in the near future? For an extra 20-30 you can get a router with wireless functionality as well. Just thought it was worth mentioning.
EDIT - Just realized you wanted to go through Newegg... I'm checking there now...

Okay, just checked newegg... They have this same model there but it's going to be 45 bucks after shipping and no apparent rebate. I'm a huge fan of Newegg's service myself so I can't knock a choice to go with them even if you pay a little more. For your needs, I believe this model is an excellent choice. Linksys, Dlink, and SMC GENERALLY seem to be pretty good in this price range. I've had nothing but problems with Netgear products. I have no experience with other brands in your price range.

Actually yea, I do plan on connecting a wi-fi laptop at some point ... and Newegg is not a hang-up ... I'll go to where the best product is at the best price.

Configuration on devices from the 3 I listed are relatively easy. You know, something I want to be clear on before hand, you are connecting through a cable modem or DSL right? If you're using a modem, I'll need to recommend something else.
Don't sweat the configuration of these devices. They are designed for joe user, not jim network admin.
Cigarettes - No cholesterol, high in fiber, low in fat, how could they not be good for you?
Yea, I have broadband (roadrunner) and am using a Toshiba PCX2600 cable modem.
I do want to have wireless capabilities for future use ... but mostly I'd like to have a technique to "hose" those that constantly scan my IP - even though ZA tells me I'm invisable to port scans.
...more people are driven insane through religious hysteria than by drinking alcohol - W.C. Fields
This one costs 119 with free shipping and a 40 dollar mail in rebate which will bring it down to 79 bucks. If you can afford the extra costs up front and don't mind waiting for a rebate, this is an excellent deal. It includes a wireless PC card for your laptop... Wireless speed is 108mps.

86.99 with PC card, and after 40 dollar mail in rebate, 46.99. This one does 54mbps wireless.
Both of these are good deals and come bundled with wireless cards. The real question is, how fast do you want to go?
Cigarettes - No cholesterol, high in fiber, low in fat, how could they not be good for you?
If you're not ready to go wireless now, look for either of these models at buy.com(not bestbuy) or newegg without the bundled card.

You know raretech, I was lazy yesterday and didn't "pull the trigger" on your advice ... those rebates are good through 10-03 ... and today being Saturday, 10-02 ... well, I'm afraid I'd miss the $40 rebate deadline for purchase/submission ... I'll just look for the router alone from whoever has the best price, and add cards on an as-needed basis. But, thanks for the advice ...
...more people are driven insane through religious hysteria than by drinking alcohol - W.C. Fields
Those rebate dates are the required purchase dates. The time frame is you must submit the application within 30 days of purchase. So you can order it up till tomorrow if you're still interested...

I could loan you a copy of my Convert a Steam account to a computer IP address program
Status in console in game gives you the Steam account the rest is buttered and banned if thought to be nasty.
You don't need to be a server admin to have full access to players IP numbers.
Hacker prevention goes beyond the games and a good solid IP address range firewall ban makes for a good batch of cooked cookies.

Won't be any issues with ZoneAlarm will there?
...more people are driven insane through religious hysteria than by drinking alcohol - W.C. Fields
Don't sweat it. Shouldn't be any issues with Zone Alarm, from what I know about it. If there are, shouldn't be hard to resolve.
Setting up is fairly easy. The software configuration is done through a web interface with menus and check boxes.
Off the top of my head, you should login to it(via the instructions provided), check the firmware revision, update if neccesary.
From there, go through the wizard(may need to do this before the update, if so, do it again after the update), then look to enable Block WAN ping. Disable remote administration. Disable wireless. Disable VPN. Disable DNS relay. Disable gaming setting, but if you have problems with some applications, enable it.
There might be more. If you see anything you have questions on, feel free to ask me here or through PM. I've set up over a dozen of those Dlink devices, most of them have worked pretty much the same.
Before you set it up though, make sure you understand whether you're using DHCP or not. You may know this as a Dyamically assigned IP address. If you are, it should be a cakewalk. If you aren't, you're going to need to have all the details of your network connection handy for setup.
Cigarettes - No cholesterol, high in fiber, low in fat, how could they not be good for you?
he also has to clone his mac address to the the router and then make sure he sets his computer ip(192.168.1.xxx) outside of the DMZ.

I'm trying to keep this easy for him. I use RR cable, and I don't need to clone a MAC address, so I'm assuming he won't need to do that either. Regarding the DMZ, this has been disabled by default on every Dlink router I've touched.
OTOH, I suppose he should check the setting just in case he gets shipped a return. But all he really needs to do to get up and running is to disable DMZ with a menu selection. He has no need of it from what he's said.

On the cloning the mac address, do you use RR and have you had to do that? You got me thinking, maybe RR has different policies in different areas? That might not be a bad idea, or at least something for Jake to keep in mind in case he runs into problems. Luckily, it's not difficult.
Cigarettes - No cholesterol, high in fiber, low in fat, how could they not be good for you?
no. my router has a choice of either using a crossover cable or straight thru cat-5. i guess you really dont have to clone your mac but i suggest it because for me it makes it easier to setup with your cable/dsl company.
