Hi,

I could really use some decent opinions about laptops.

Im pretty up to date with PC's and recently build an AMD high spec machine but sadly my laptop knowledge has deteriorated over the last couple years.
The laptop is for my girlfriend and she needs it pretty soon so I dont have as much time as I want to research the subject.
Hence the plea for help!!

I am looking for a good laptop in the range of £700 to £850.
Ideally i need 2gbs ram as it has to have Vista 32.

As I am an AMD guy I really need some help choosing between things like Pentium M and Centrino etc. Obviously Celeron is out of the question and Im looking for a good performing CPU. Ideally a decent 17'' screen is also desired :p
She is mainly going to be using it for music and a movies and email, facebook etc. So probably not a hectic Alienware but not an older tech piece of rubbish that takes 1 min to load an app.

Just a quick thanks in advance for this much needed advice. So... hit me!

In terms of a CPU, you're looking for a Core 2 Duo, I'd suggest something in the range of the T7xxx. I'll let other people suggest laptops for you though, since I don't know as much about the not-so-gaming laptops.

Advice: Don't buy from Alienware anyway. Their quality has apparently fallen down into a ditch. Filled with alligators. Rabid alligators.

Thanks man, sound advice. I did actually hear that about Alienware.
Its a shame when you completely sell out your products name+quality for profit. Core 2 Duo it is.

Now - for the suggested laptops???

The Dell Inspiron 1720 would fit the bill.

Look for a Core2Duo or at least a Turion X2 TL-60
2gb of RAM
100gb HDD (at least 5400rpm)
low-end graphics card
Large battery for mobility
Either XP or Vista (your/her preference)

Definitely something with a Core 2 Duo T7XXX. A 2.0 ghz should be easy to get with that budget. I've got a HP dv9335 that was $1500 back in the spring. I've played Supreme Commander, Half Life 2: EP2 mid-high settings and use autocad programs. Its a very competent computer.

Core 2 Duo T5300 (1.73 Ghz)
2 Gigs DDR2 6400
nVidia GeForce Go 7600
160 gb HD
17" Brightview screen
etc.

You will be able to blow my machine out of the water with your budget and selection today. HP makes some high quality machines so look into their product lines. You should be able to get a DX 10 GPU and a 2.0Ghz CPU and still have money for a replacement plan.
