I know there is alot of threads about these already, but none of them answer my question specificaly.

I am wanting to by my wife a gaming laptop for christmas. She doesnt play high pace FPS games and never will. But she does play games that need a 3.0 shader model or better.

I've been looking at the Nvidia machines and the dell ones, and also the alien ware ones. They all seem either extremely over powered for what she needs and the price also follow's, or absolutly **** for the money.

I want to spend between 600-1000 GBP (or upto 1200 EURO as i work part time in Belgium).

Does anyone have one to recomend, something that will support 3.0 shader model, have atleast 256 Dedicated RAM, either the card its self (for a notebook) or a system pre built.

The system needs to have 2.0GHZ or above, Dual core only.
1gig + ram, i can by more RAM and fit this myself for half the price most companys are charging.
Also must be windows Vista (dont care which version)
No harddrive minimum as we have several externals we use to store just about everything on.

Any advice, or general knowledge is very welcomed. I'd like to learn aswell as not buy something ill regret.

Thanks in advance.

I have no idea how much 1000 GBP or 1200 Euro is, but I got the laptop in my sig for under $900 from the Dell outlet and it is a fine gaming machine for a great price. I just scored 3520 3DMarks06, so it should be perfect for what you need. Check at http://www.delloutlet.com and best of luck in your search.

If you're just looking for a laptop for mid range gaming (ie, not Crysis or Oblivion), then you can pretty much get any of the big brand (like Asus or HP)'s power laptops. Look for something with a Go 8600 GT, something along those lines.

Take a lock for ROCK laptops in your local dealers like DABs etc.

They are based on solid Clevo chassis and usually have great options. I see alot of positive recommendations coming from the UK for them. I was considering one at one time for myself and having it shipped over, but after all the hassle it would've cost as much as a local VooDoo laptop, so no Rock for me.

There are some inexpensive DELLs out there, and they offer you some flexability in building a very capable machine, and actually Crysis and Oblivion are quite possible on a T7xxx with a GF8600, those games benifit more from the unified shader architecture than any others, and would likely equal or outperform ibleet's GFGO7900GS and be just under the Worminator's GTX, but specifically in those games. That's not to say you'll be able to play at full res and Ultra features, but it will be playable. I'm playing the Crysis Demo @ Medium settings on the HD2600 with a T7300, and it's enjoyable. Sure it could be better, but laptop gaming is about compromises, especially in a game where desktop GF8800Ultras struggle.

Actually the HDD minimum I would recommend, is if you can get a 7200RPM drive when you part it together, try to get one if it's not too prohibitive. For DELL it's nice that it's usually a size differential more than a price differential, like a 160GB 5400 costs as much as a100GB 7200 drive. And I agree about the externals as you may notice by my hardware profile.
