I have a strange tcp/ip problem.
Symptom:
The network connections suddenly all lose their Default Gateway setting
after some minutes. This of course makes it impossible for me to reach any
computer outside my network.
The networks I have been using all use DHCP but I know problem is NOT in the
networks, for several reasons:
1. all other computers works fine
2. I have the same problem in several different locations (I'm traveling the
US for the moment)
3. Any Virtual computer I use on the very same machine -- using VMWare --
works perfectly when set as networking is set to: "Bridged: Connect directly
to the physical network".
4. Uninstalling the NIC drivers, rebooting, reinstalling and rebooting makes
the problem go away *temporarily* (a few minutes). And this is true no matter
if I am doing it for the wired or the wireless NIC.
I have tried ipconfig.exe /release followed by ipconfig.exe/renew and that
gives me the following message amongst the other standard messages:
"An error occurred while renewing interface %1 : unable to contact your
DHCP server. Request has timed out."
Notes:
* %1 is either local network connection or wireless local connection.
* I DO get a valid IP address, but it is blank right next to where the
default gateway should be written.
* pinging 127.0.0.1, localhost and what I know is the IP address of the
default gateway works fine.
* Also note that manually setting the values the DHCP server had sent me,
and filling in what I know is the ip address of the default gateway doesn't
help.. I still cannot connect to anything outside my network.
Perhaps there is something wrong with the TCP/IP stack, I really don't know.
I am using a Swedish version of Windows XP SP2. "winver" reports Microsoft
(R) Windows version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 : Service Pack
2) on a DELL portable Latitude D800. I have updated Windows and all NIC
drivers with the latest ones.
Help much appreciated!!! Thanks,
Fredrik
