Question is just as the title suggests. I have my laptop hooked up to the sound system in our common room, and have imported all my CD's, and play files to the system through iTunes. However, the songs always "hiccup" every 20 seconds or so, but when one of my roomates, who plays songs with WMP, plays them through the system, it works fine. So, basically I want to convert my iTunes files (MPEG4) to MP3 files that I can play on WMP to see if that will get rid of the hiccups.

Yeah that's what I WAS getting at. I was just wondering if MPEG-4 can also be a sound-only format. Don't think I've heard of that before. I'm guessing he needs any program that opens MP4s and converts them. Hmm, encoders should be right for that. SoundForge is also a possibility, a very valid one actually.

d00d our Audio 1 class was all about SoundForge, and it's pretty much one of the strongest tools for sound editing. Definitely rocks.

Well, it seems version 6 won't. Let's see if Sony added it with the 7. Do you have it?

I really don't know anything about MPEG-4 other than for the movie format, so I can't say much about it.

Do you want to rip the sound stream from the MPEG4, or do you want to move it all to MP3?

The site puts MPEG-4 under "extractable" audio, which leads me to believe MPEG-4 isn't a music standard but indeed a movie format.

MPEG-4 is basically a video and audio track layered together, the audio decoder extracts the audio and converts it into the straight Audio format you need! The Audio Decoder I posted the link to will convert into a couple of formats and MP3 is one of them.

I beleive he's talking about AAC files. AAC is often called MPEG-4 audio

If you've purchased these music from iTunes store, then you need to remove DRM from these files with some illegal DRM iTunes removal tool.

If you have Nero Burning ROM, then collect free MP4/AAC and Lame MP3 plug-in from http://neroplugins.cd-rw.org and then convert these files with "Extras-->Encode files..."

BTW, AAC/MP4 to MP3 conversion will degrade audio quality of your music files.

I didn't buy this music from the iTunes store, I imported it into iTunes from my CD collection at 256kbps. Problem is, every 20-30 seconds or so, the song sort of "hiccups", which gets really annoying, really fast. I am hoping that maybe this is just a problem wit5h iTunes or the format I have it in. Is there any free program that will do this?

Have you at least tried playing the music in WMP or WinAMP?

Just to be sure?

And why would you import into MP4 anyways? I'll leave the forum's picky music format nut to give you tips on that: Spitfire.

It's in MP4 because that's what it's set to default. I'm not even sure if you can import to anything else. Hmm, just checked, you can import in other formats. I wonder why AAC is default? I guess i'll try re-importing everything as MP3. Oh, and WMP can't play AAC/MP4 files.

MP4 is the container. It can contain both MPEG4 video and AAC audio. AAC may be the MPEG-4 audio standard, I'm not sure about it.

Download AAC DirectShow parser and decoder filters. They allow you to play .aac files using Windows Media Player.

Basically, you can any audio format using Windows Media player (or other apps, which depend on directshow filter), if you have appropiate DirectShow filter.
