Anything inherent in the memory re: DDR?

Is there anything in the memory module itself that lends itself compatible with DDR MOBOs? I'm not speaking of timings or bandwidth here. I see that some modules are labeled as DDR SDRAM. Isn't only until they are installed do they become DDR?

memory refered to as "DDR" memory is actually DDR SDRAM. You see, there are two types of memory that use DDR technology, RDRAM and DDR SDRAM. And the second one is what people are refering to when they say "DDR" memory.

Single Data Rate SDRAM modules are generally refered to simply as "SDRAM" while DDR SDRAM modules are generally refered to as "DDR". These are two different types of memory, DDR SDRAM has a different pin configuration than SDR SDRAM.
