Suggestions on best way for a good front end with surround..

Hi Folks,

Hey, I'm looking to buy a new front end to replace a recently deceased 15
year old Nakamichi 75 Watt receiver. (TA3A). Anyway, I was initially
looking at surround sound receivers like the Yamaha RXV-1500 and the Integra
5.5 but I was soon overwhelmed by all the features. My goal is to first get
my main speakers (A/D/S L990 pretty decent speakers) up and running with
something that is sounds as good or better than the Nak. I'd rather put my
$$$ into a reasonable front end first and perhaps add a not too expensive
surround unit in later. The sound of my music is my biggest priority and
surround sound is sort of a fun afterthought, music is much more important
to me.

So, if I go back to basics, I'm considering some mid-fi like a good
integrated amp like (NAD or Rotel, etc.) with a little power (75-120 watts).
My hope is to then have the integrated amp / separates drive the main
speakers while the surround unit drives the 2x rear speakers and the center
channel, and to be able to take the surround unit out of the signal path
when listening to the main setup.

I've heard a couple suggestions on this front. One was to put the surround
unit in a tape monitor and work 2 volume controls, the other was to double
the wire to the main speakers. (One set of wire from the surround unit, one
set from the integrated/seperates. That was interesting but sounds like it
might present some impedance issues? Is this dangerous?

Thanks Jenn. Anyone have tips on adding in a surround and the best way to
wire it?
