Can anyone point me to a schematic for the Adcom GFA 5400 power amp? I'm
trying to track down the source of some severe distortion I'm hearing from
both channels.

try http://www.adcom.com/contactinfo.htm. i got schematics for my
GTP500 and GFA5800. haven't asked for the GDA700 schematics (yet).
as i recall, there was a small fee.
i fried the 5800's power supply by dropping a probe onto the circuit
board (!). i was trying to find out why one channel's fan was running
at a different speed than the other, but it turns out that's normal.
at the time, the 5800 service manual didn't exist, so they faxed me
the relevant schematics, i used them to find the toasted parts,
ordered parts from adcom, and was back up and running in less than a
week. adcom was still in NJ at the time, and i was in eastern PA.
they said if i wanted to i could drive over there with the amp and
they'd fix it while i waited, which was very cool - but my theory is
if i killed it, i should fix it.

Thanks, Scott. They charge $25 for the service manual with schematic (mail
or e-mail). What does the service manual contain?
Yes, you can get very far repairing an amp with a schematic and voltmeter.
I've also found that most parts may be obtained for much less from
mouser.com or any of the other online electronics parts suppliers (digikey,
newark, etc)

theory of operation, detailed specs, testing/alignment (if there's
anything adjustable - on the 5800, it's the crossover point for the
push/pull), schematics, parts list. pretty much standard stuff. and
in my experience, if you have any questions it's pretty easy to get a
tech/engineer on the phone to help.
