I need a mediocre/average gaming laptop. No games too high end, maybe some UT2k4, Far Cry, Dark Messiah, and some FPS(Maybe Crysis). I would like a DX10 card, obviously, at least 2gigs ram, and I don't need a large HDD. Does anyone know any good bang-for-buck laptop builders? And have any suggestions for what I should get?

Dell wouldn't be a bad option here. Two others that come to mind are xoticpc.com and sagernotebook.com (where I got mine). Something in the 15.4'' or 17'' would have what you are looking for. Look for one with a Core2Duo CPU (T7300 or T7500), at least an 8600mGT or 8700mGT and a 7200rpm hard drive. That should do pretty well for you.

I kind of have a choice in mind with dell, just don't know how well it will perform. T7500, 8600GT, 2gig 667mhz, 120gig HDD 7200 rpm. And the total price(After the holiday savings thing) comes up to 1,100.

Good buy? Will it work for what I intend to do?

It will handle everything fine except maybe Crysis. Not much is able to handle Crysis at the moment though. It brings quite a few desktops to their knees.

I dunno.
I can run Crysis on my desktop on low settings. I am using a x800, OCed +50 clock speed, 768 RAM DDR-400, 3.0 P4 OCed to 3.2.
I only really get 1-8 FPS when I am using driving and fighting. During normal fights/shoot-outs, I average 20-30 FPS, its only when the game has to do physics related rendering that it really drops the FPS.

I agree that it wont run Crysis...that game is simply not designed to run on laptops.

Otherwise, that configuration should work well with most existing games.

I was assuming you wanted to use DX10 settings. Everything changes with DX10 lol. Performance wise that is.

The laptop will still play the game, don't get me wrong. You just might not be able to use high settings.

How much does DX10 change performance wise? I haven't used it/have no experience in it.

It seems to depend on the game. In some games, using DX10 doesn't seem to affect your performance. In others (Crysis being one of them), DX10 really hurts. Also note: Just because you have a DX10 card, doesn't mean you have to use DX10. You can still use DX9 to play your games.

I can run Crysis at 1024 with everything turned on low...well, medium, but then I get hiccups, so low it is. :P

DX10's performance hit depends on the game. In my experience, the better looking DX10 looks over DX9, the more it hurts your computer, haha. For your gaming, I think that Dell will do fine. No point spending an extra thousand for really sweet rig if you're not going to need it.
