I have a ghost in my telephone

I figured if anyone could come up with any ideas, this might be the
place.

This actually started last Wednesday, as in last week. I got woken up
by the cops about 9:00 in the morning. They said I'd called 911,
which of course I didn't cause I was asleep. Just thought it was a
weird fluke, phone lines got crossed or something.

Then a bit after noon they came out again. Not a fluke. So this time
I called the phone company and they said they'd check the lines.
Someone did come out and work on something in the lines coming through
the alley next door. My neighbor said they were working on her lines
just a couple of weeks ago.

Anyway, nothing for two days so I thought it was solved. Then Friday
when I got home from the surgery I discovered it had happened again,
about 10 minutes after my brother and I had left for the surgical
center.

I know this cause of the weird message I get on my machine. Here's
part of the strange thing. Answering machines take *incoming* calls.
My machine is recording the outgoing call. I can hear the phone
ringing and someone picking up and saying, "911," and then of course
they repeat themselves a couple of times because I'm not answering
them. They finally hang up and just send the cops out. I think it's
very strange I'm getting their end on my answering machine. Why is my
answering machine recording this?

So I called the phone company again and this time asked if I could
speak with the repair guy to see if he had any ideas what could cause
this. I talked to him Saturday. He worked on the line again and said
there were some major problems with it, and he thought he had them all
fixed, but doesn't know if that's what's causing the issue. He did
say sometimes when the battery's low on a cordless phone they can
randomly make calls -- fine for the first time, but 3 times isn't
random. (Besides, that's not even the phone that was plugged in.)
And he also said on an older phone that it can start calling the
auto-dial numbers. Haven't used the memory thing in years and the
corded phone is pretty old. Sure enough -- 911 is the first number
listed. So I cleared it. Actually, I replaced it with time & weather
just to make sure it wasn't 911. That was Saturday and it didn't
happen all week, so I started thinking maybe that was the problem.
And somehow the phone calling a stored memory number even makes some
sense to me.

Except it just happened again! So it's not a problem calling the
auto-dial thing. Not only did I change it, but after I got done
explaining this to the cops yet again I discovered I had the cordless
phone plugged in. So that's a completely different phone than when it
was happening last week. So it's *not* the phone.

I'm going to call them to come out and check these lines again. My
neighbor said they've been working other places around these few
streets and I think something's really wrong with these lines (except
I'm not getting knocked offline or anything). But if it's inside my
house I have to pay minimum $70 for them to come out and can't afford
it.

I have no clue what could cause this, my brother is at a loss. Two
different phones so that's not it. It's occured to me that lines do
cross, but who would keep calling 911 and coincidentally crossing with
my line all the time. Plus they would be trying to find out why no
one was answering their calls. It's also occured to me that someone
has the technology to actually break into my line and is doing it just
to be an ass, though it's not a particularly funny joke.

Anyone got any knowledge about this or have any bright ideas?

Neat. You use a regular phone line modem? Maybe you have some kind of
autodialer trojan?

Are you sure the cordless phone wasn't connected for the first bogus
calls? Maybe someone nearby is on the same channel.

Can you just leave all phones disconnected for a while and see if it
happens again?

Neat? I bet all your victims say that too.

The puter's on a different phone line, cause I made sure I asked which
line the calls were coming from. Which, actually, should've been
obvious to me since the answering machine's on the regular line. I've
had these two lines cross (long distance calls made on one line show
up as on the other line, stuff like that), but that's rare and I can't
imagine these lines crossing, coincidentally when the computer decides
to dial 911, 4 times in a week. But just for fun, I'll run all the
stuff and check.

No. I remember cause that's one of the first things I checked, after
the second cop said sometimes cordless phones will dial random numbers
when the battery's low.

Sure, I could. Except it didn't happen for 6 days, so that's a long
time to leave all my phones disconnected so I can test it. Of course,
I could leave them disconnected at night and while gone. If I'm here
I'll hear it on the answering machine and I can at least grab the
phone and tell them not to send the cops out.

Because they no longer exist?
Becuase they no longer have the ability to speak?
Because they no longer have the will to speak?

Because they're too busy laughing at what passes for "torture" these days!

Because they are ghosts in Erimess' telephone.

That *would* explain a lot. I'll tell the cops we've solved it the
next time they come out...
