I'm planning a new home entertainment system, but wish to satisfy my
modest recording needs at the same time. At this point I am thinking of
buying a pair of powered studio monitor speakers and a DVD/CD player
with digital output (S/PDIF seems to be standard). I also want to
connect up my computer and an assortment of analogue devices such as a
record player and tape recorder.
What I need is a good box that can perform the routing of singals
between the various devices, a/d and d/a conversions, etc. Since I'm on
a tight budget, I'll be at the lower end of the price range. One feature
I need is digital output: I want to be able to route an analogue input
via the a/d conversion to a digital output that can go straight to a
sound card. The only devices I have found via a Google search capable of
doing this are controllers/processors for home theatre systems and they
tend to be very expensive.
Is there anything available or forthcoming that would be more suitable
for my purpose - some sort of embedded system?

There are lots of relatively inexpensive ($400) mixers available in the pro
marketplace that feature both analog and digital outputs. Visit
www.sweetwater.com or www.bswusa.com for a look/see. One of these might fit
your needs.
