i'm looking to add an external drive to my system.

here's my question? i've priced the very nice looking drives by maxtor, seagate, and so on... but i've also seen external enclosures where you drop the internal ide drive of your choice. by my calculations, you come out ahead if you make your own, but are there any drawbacks i should be aware of?

Some IDE to USB adapters are faster than others, therefore performance of the entire unit will depend on the quality of the internal parts. Choose carefully.
