So, looking for a high end 20+ inch monitor as my 17" doesn't have enough space to view all the porn I want :oops: ...

Been looking at the Dell 2405FPW / 2005FPW - Any other suggestions.

^ If anyone has the above monitor what is it like for gaming?

3! Wow. Yeah, I PM'd D before I made this thread.

I did once have 2 17" monitors, and while that was good I couldn't stand the fragmentation of the picture.

I've owned both the 2005fpw and 2405fpw btw.

Obviously the 2405fpw rocks but if you don't quite want to spend that much get the 2005fpw which is nice as well and won't be so demanding on games since it runs at 1680x1050 vs the 1920x1200 that my 2405fpw runs at. I also like the flash card readers on the 2405fpw as well as the way HD content looks on it. The thing is, you can get a 2405fpw for around $900 but you can get a 2005fpw for less than $400 if you look hard enough. I paid $600 for mine so spending the extra $300 was relatively easy but to pay an extra $500 or so is a bit more.

Being in the UK I can get a 24" for £519 ish. I'm not upto date on the exchange rates but say it is $1.7 to £1 = $882

Running at non-native resolutions is kinda bad on any lcd. Especially in 2D. In games though you can change the aspect ratio and get the game to play at lower than 1920x1200 with it still looking good. I haven't quite figured it out perfectly but basically you'll get black bars on the sides for most games. In some games though like HL2 there were certain resolutions (I think the WS resolutions) where it would literally just center the window on the monitor.

If you have the money, get it. I run mine with a x800xl and it's fine for most everything except games like Farcry, HL2, and FEAR that really get bogged down at the higher settings.

If you get a 2405fpw plan on upgrading graphics cards sooner than you thought. I mean, why buy an uber monitor if you're not going to play at high settings?

Well, looking on Ebay:

24" = £519
20" = £369

It's this student loan, it's burning a hole in my pocket - That's why I got my PSP, but I still have way too much money.

Don't buy it on Ebay. That's my opinion at least. I bought a 2005fpw for $600 to my door from Dell. Buddy did the same thing but got charged $60 for shipping. The guy had a sneaky line in there that said free shipping if paid immediately or something. Well, Paypal doesn't process the sale immediately so he was charged the shipping.

On top of that if you get a dead pixel you're out of luck. I sent my first 2005fpw back and got another one that was perfect. No cost to me.

Do you know Dells dead pixel policy? Is it just one pixel?!

I sent it back and had no problems. I simply said I was unhappy with the backlight bleeding and dead/stuck pixels.

Ok. You might not have that option. You'll need to stack some coupons!

Reply to dhlucke

How do I get said coupons?

benbargains, techbargains, etc.

Search the net. There's probably a coupon/bargain site setup for the UK.

Reply to dhlucke

Dell doesn't offer all of the coupons to non-US customers. You may have to find someone here that you can trust to buy it for you and work out an arragement to get it. I have a friend that buys and resells dell equipment to international buyers. They get a deal, because it's cheaper than normal for them and he gets the extra cash because of the rebates, and coupons.

What about LCD TVs as monitors, some have DVi connections and are cheaper than PC monitors - what's the catch/

Reply to Ned_Flanders

The catch is the lower contrast ratio, resolution, and response time.

Reply to dhlucke

Some have 16ms r/time and reasonable rez:

26" Acer AL2671W LCD TV
1280 x 768

Is it really that bad?

It has less resolution and contrast ratio and a bit more brightness, but put into a much larger screen.

How's it look?

the whole unit looks alright...pretty simple, not gaudy like some of the shitass LCDs we sell.

The problem is that we dont have 1080p content going to the TV right now....just the regular feed that everything gets....but its 1080p...the only think i would be worried about is repsonse time because i dont think i noitced that.
